AIBA World Boxing Championships

Clear the ring for Hamburg

In 2014, the German Boxing Federation and the city of Hamburg applied to host the 2017 AIBA Boxing World Championships in Olympic Boxing. A gigantic adventure began, in which Apollo18 was deeply involved.
The 200-page bid book, the bid presentation in Qatar, the contract negotiations, and the financing were only the first round.

Boxing camp and punch bag – 2 years of sweat and tears

The planning for the Boxing World Championships lasted from the beginning of 2015 to mid-2017. It proved to be worthwhile: an opening ceremony for the delegations in the Elbphilharmonie, 280 participants from over 80 nations, ten days of events, 934 hours of boxing, 386 TV broadcasts in 15 countries, eight hotels, 500 accreditations, three press conferences, ten weight classes, 167 fights and 80 volunteers. Another highlight was the sold-out hall on Saturday, the day of the final.

Excellent conditions

The athletes found optimal conditions on site. Right next to the venue of the Boxing World Championships, the Sporthalle Hamburg, is the Leichtathletikhalle. Here, the participants were able to train under excellent conditions because of our activation. In addition, the Leichtathletikhalle acted as a press center. For everyone involved, it was a world championship of short distances.

More than a sparring partner

What about us? After many rounds of fighting, we were knocked out on our feet, but winner on points. For the first time in 22 years, a Boxing World Championship took place in Germany and was successfully implemented. The excursion into the world of boxing taught us that we can achieve anything with passion, pioneering spirit, and fun.
